History
Founding and Early Years
Officially chartered on September 25, 1966, Skyline United Methodist Church was established to meet the spiritual needs of the growing Pike Creek Valley population. Under the leadership of its founding pastor, Ron Bergman, the congregation first gathered in the basement of a local model home before moving to Skyline Junior High School. As the church grew, a dedicated church building was constructed and opened in 1976. The church’s outdoor grove quickly became a cherished gathering space for worship during the warmer months.
Leadership and Growth
In 1997, Skyline welcomed co-pastors Vicki and Bo Gordy-Stith, ushering in a season of growth that led to a $1.8 million building campaign. The expansion, completed in 2004, added a worship center, fellowship hall, and education spaces. During this time, Skyline heard God’s calling to be a “border” church, welcoming those often marginalized by society and other churches. This commitment led to ministries such as a class for developmentally disabled children and adults, worship services at a local nursing home, the intentional inclusion of children in worship, and a full embrace of LGBTQ+ persons as members of the household of God.
In 2013, Reverend Carmella Evans was appointed pastor. Her leadership brought the introduction of a Wellness Center, promoting a holistic approach to spiritual and personal growth. Youth and children’s ministries flourished under the leadership of Brent O’Neil, and worship services blended contemporary and traditional music to engage all generations.
In March 2020, Pastor Ruthann Turner began her leadership at Skyline just as the COVID-19 pandemic began. Her ability to communicate God’s message in relatable ways provided stability in an uncertain time. Under her leadership, Skyline embraced hybrid worship, continued its strong community outreach, and remained a place of connection. In 2023, retired Reverend Tom Edwards joined Skyline, helping launch Disciple Bible studies and revitalize the Confirmation process. In 2024, Skyline transitioned to a Leadership Board model, consolidating the Finance, Staff-Pastor Relations, and Trustee committees into a single governing body.
Today
For over five decades, Skyline United Methodist Church has remained a steadfast presence in the Pike Creek community, continually evolving to meet the needs of its congregation and neighbors. We are a come-as-you-are and hands-on community of faith, deeply committed to worship, service, and connection.
In July 2025, Skyline Church will welcome a new pastor as Pastor Ruthann Turner and Reverend Tom Edwards retire. We are excited to introduce Pastor Sean M. Lee, who will bring with him 30 years of ministry and missions experience. We look forward to this next chapter in the life of our church, as we continue to grow in love, compassion, and outreach under his leadership.
